Master’s Study & Residence FAQ

Practical answers for Master’s study in New Zealand and related visas.

This guide covers Master’s programmes and admission, tuition and student-visa funds, partner and children visas, and post-study work or residence pathways. Advice is general; your own circumstances may differ.

A

Master’s programmes and admission

1 What level is a Master's degree in NZ and how long does it take?

A Master's degree is NZQCF Level 9. It generally takes 1–2 years, depending on the credits, institution and field.

2 Can a one-year Master's graduate apply for a three-year work visa?

Yes.

3 Can I study a Master of Management with an unrelated Bachelor's degree?

Yes.

4 I have extensive work experience but my Bachelor's degree is unrelated to the Master's I want. Can I apply?

The Master's only needs to relate to one of two things: the Bachelor's degree or work experience. Experience in a field can support an application to a related Master's programme.

5 Should I choose a general Master of Management or a specialist Master's to find work?

It depends on your background and career goals. A general management degree can be more flexible across industries; a specialist degree may suit someone with relevant experience. Assess real vacancies rather than just degree titles. Search SEEK and Trade Me for commonly advertised jobs in NZ.

6 Is a Master's from a private provider different from one awarded by an NZ university?

Both qualifications are equally recognised, and both allow graduates to apply for a three-year open work visa after completion.

7 What IELTS/PTE score is needed for a Master's?

Many programmes require IELTS Academic 6.5 (often no band below 6.0) or PTE 58. However, Master's degrees in health or education require IELTS 7.0.

8 Can someone over 35 or 40 apply for a Master's Student Visa?

There is no maximum age for a Master's Student Visa.

B

Tuition, financial evidence and student visa

9 How much does a Master's degree cost?

Fees depend on the provider, programme, credits and intake year. There is no single Master's fee across NZ. You can Google the school and course you are interested in. Tuition at one of NZ's eight universities is generally higher than at private providers. Cheaper schools are usually not as good in quality as more expensive ones.

10 How much living money must I show for a 12-month Master's Student Visa?

For one year, show NZD 20,000; for 1.5 years, NZD 30,000; for two years, NZD 40,000.

11 If tuition is already paid, must I prove the source of tuition funds?

No.

12 Must I explain the source of the NZD 20,000 annual living funds?

Yes. Show that the money was lawfully earned or came from a documented asset sale.

13 Can salary and savings be used as evidence?

Yes. Provide salary statements, employment contracts, tax/social-insurance evidence if available, and savings history. Funds should be consistent with actual income.

14 Can money from selling a house or land be used?

Yes. Provide ownership documents, sale agreement, payment receipts and bank statements showing incoming proceeds so INZ can verify the transaction.

15 Must land be sold at least three months before applying for a visa?

All land sales must take place at least three months before the visa application date.

16 Can parents, siblings, aunts or uncles provide funds?

Yes, but birth certificates are needed to prove the family relationship. Money lent for study must also have a traceable legitimate source and must not be money laundering.

17 What if I have savings but no income statements?

A term deposit proves the amount held but does not necessarily explain its source. Include deposit history, employment income documents, asset sale contracts or other evidence explaining how savings accumulated.

18 Can I apply for a visa before paying tuition?

Yes, if the student is outside NZ. But if tuition is paid after applying, its source may need to be explained, which can require more evidence.

19 Are medical examinations and police certificates compulsory for a Student Visa?

Master's students are usually only required to have a chest X-ray.

20 How early should I apply for my Student Visa?

INZ recommends applying at least three months before your intended travel to NZ.

21 Can I apply for an NZ Master's visa after being refused a visa by another country?

Yes.

C

Visas for partners and children

22 Whom can a Master's student support to come to NZ?

An eligible Level 9 Master's student can support a partner (unmarried cohabiting partner, husband or wife) for a Partner of a Student Work Visa. They may support family visitor visas as permitted. For an ordinary Master's, a child's student visa generally relies on a partner who already holds a work visa, rather than direct support by the Master's student.

23 Can I support an unmarried boyfriend or girlfriend?

Yes. INZ recognises a de facto relationship if both are 18 or older, live together in a genuine and stable relationship and have suitable evidence. Dating without ever living together will generally not meet partnership work visa requirements.

24 If we are married, must we still prove we live together?

Yes. A marriage certificate does not replace proof of living together in a genuine and stable relationship. Provide evidence of shared addresses, finances/responsibilities and relationship history.

25 What evidence is usually used to prove a partnership?

Tenancy agreements, bills or mail to the shared address, joint accounts or spending, photos, dated messages, trips together and letters from family. The evidence should reflect real shared domestic life.

26 Does my partner need a job offer for a Partner Work Visa?

No.

27 Can a Partner Work Visa holder work freely and study?

Yes.

28 Can an ordinary Master's student directly support a child to study as a domestic student?

An ordinary Master's student CANNOT directly support a child's Dependent Child Student Visa on this basis. INZ allows direct support in special cases such as a PhD or designated NZ scholarship. The usual pathway is Master's student → partner work visa → partner supports the child.

29 What is the correct order for a child's Dependent Child Student Visa?

Step 1: The Master's student receives an eligible Student Visa. Step 2: Their partner obtains a Partner of a Student Work Visa. Step 3: The partner, who is the child's parent and holds an appropriate work visa, supports the child's Dependent Child Student Visa. Each application has its own requirements.

30 Can a child supported by a partner's Work Visa attend public school as a domestic student?

Yes.

31 Can a child under five obtain a Student Visa to attend school?

Children below school-entry age generally apply for an appropriate Visitor Visa. Dependent Child Student Visas apply from age 4.5. Children under 4.5 on Visitor Visas can still attend kindergarten.

32 Can my spouse and children apply at the same time as my Student Visa?

Yes. However, to limit potential financial loss, it is preferable for the Master's student to obtain the Student Visa first, then for the family to apply. If the student's visa is refused, the family's visas may also be declined, and application fees are significant.

33 If my partner cannot get a Work Visa, can my child still come?

No. However, after graduating and obtaining a three-year open work visa, the former student can directly support the child's visa.

34 Do my partner's and children's visas automatically renew after I graduate?

No. When the graduate moves to a PSWV, the partner and children must apply for appropriate new visas to continue staying in NZ.

D

Post-study work visa and residence pathways

35 Do I need a job offer to apply for a PSWV after Master's graduation?

No job offer is needed to apply for a three-year open work visa.

36 Can I work in any occupation on a Master's PSWV?

Yes.

37 Can I receive another PSWV after a second Master's?

No. Under the general rule, a person can receive a PSWV only once.

38 How many Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) points does an NZ Master's give?

From 24 August 2026, an NZ Level 9 Master's may provide six points if the graduate holds a Bachelor's degree and studied full-time for at least 30 weeks in NZ. Otherwise it may provide only five points.

39 With six Master's points and a median-wage job, can I obtain residence immediately?

No. Besides six points, the applicant needs a job offer meeting skilled employment/job-offer requirements and pay at the median wage (currently $35/hour; this figure tends to increase annually).

40 Can work outside my Master's subject count for SMC?

Yes, provided the work pays at least the median wage.

41 If I do not meet residence requirements after PSWV, can I apply for an AEWV?

Yes. If you find a job but earn below the median wage, you may qualify for a five-year employer-sponsored work visa and support your family to continue living, working and studying in NZ.

42 Is an Accredited Employer Work Visa always five years?

No. Many occupations may have a maximum continuous stay of five years; after five years, the worker must leave NZ for one year before applying for another AEWV.

43 Does an AEWV guarantee my partner and child can remain in NZ?

A partner can be supported, but a child's student visa is not guaranteed. The worker's pay must be high enough to support a child. The current requirement is NZD 58,240 per year.

44 Which Master's subject offers the easiest path to residence?

No course guarantees residence. Consider personal background, real job opportunities, skilled-job requirements and SMC or Green List routes; avoid promises of automatic residence. Strong English helps you compete with international applicants. Shortage occupations such as doctors, dentists and Green List occupations can make finding work and residence easier.

45 What if SMC, PSWV or AEWV rules change while I am studying?

Future pathways may be affected. Eligibility and assessment depend on rules then in force and any transitional provisions. Students should plan careers and finances without relying on one rule. NZ residence rules change frequently, so today's advice may be different when you apply.
